The Top 10 Programming Languages Used With AI (& How To Learn Them)

If you’re learning to code right now, an AI tool can probably write the thing you’re stuck on. Working developers use AI tools all the time, and increasingly so in a practice called AI-assisted development, where AI handles execution and the human developer stays in control of understanding, decisions, and accountability.

More than 30,000 people took Stack Overflow’s 2026 Developer Survey, and when it asked developers which languages they’ve used AI tools or agents with over the past year, Python and JavaScript came out on top. The survey question is about AI-assisted coding, meaning languages developers worked in with an AI tool’s help — not, say, languages used to build AI models.

AI models work well with Python and JavaScript in part because they’re massively popular on their own. JavaScript was the most popular language in the survey (for the 12th year in a row!), and there’s a massive volume of JavaScript and TypeScript code out there for LLMs to train on. Python, which is ranked fourth most popular overall after SQL and HTML/CSS, uses a simple syntax with pre-written libraries and frameworks that allow you to start coding more complicated AI and machine learning concepts faster.

Here’s the rest of the top programming languages for AI work, plus courses you can take to learn the languages and AI-assisted development…
